5 Natural Ways to Deal With Work-Related Stress

Everyone experiences stress at some point or another, whether it’s from the workplace or home life. Though stress can seem overwhelming and impossible to deal with, there are many effective ways to reduce it that are easily at your disposal. These five natural ways to deal with work-related stress will help you manage your anxiety and find peace in an otherwise chaotic world.

1) Establish Boundaries

If your job is causing you a lot of stress, and you can’t seem to shake it off, there may be a simple reason: You don’t have set hours. If your boss expects you to check emails at midnight and not take breaks on a whim, chances are he or she doesn’t respect your time. You need some way of communicating what is OK and what isn’t with regard to work expectations.

Talk to your boss about creating boundaries for yourself—for example, only checking email twice a day during normal business hours—and stick to them. Not only will you feel less stressed about work when you aren’t constantly under pressure from above, but also setting boundaries will help improve your relationship with your manager in general. It shows that you value yourself enough to say no when necessary and that you understand how important it is for everyone to keep their cool during busy times.

2) Eat Healthy and Get Plenty of Sleep

If you’re stressed out, your body will hold onto calories instead of burning them. That means that eating healthy and getting plenty of sleep—both necessary parts of managing stress—will help you lose weight. Exercise can also release endorphins and help make it easier for you to fall asleep. Not only is exercise a natural stress reliever, but it’s an important part of weight loss because your body burns more calories when you’re not just sitting around.

If you don’t work out often, consider finding time for 10 minutes of activity every day.  Even small things like taking a walk or doing some stretches in your office chair count as physical activity. It all adds up!

Our days are often filled with tasks and chores that can lead to feelings of overwhelm. One of the best ways you can find inner peace in your life is by learning how to be more mindful. Most of these exercises take very little time, but they can lead to considerable shifts in your thinking and wellbeing.

For example, if you’re feeling stressed about work or home obligations, try sitting down and simply observing what’s going on around you. It may sound silly at first, but taking a few minutes to really focus on what’s happening around you will help put things into perspective. When it comes to practicing mindfulness, it’s not so much about doing specific exercises as it is just paying attention.

4) Get an Accountability Buddy

A common cause of work-related stress is feeling as though you have too much work and not enough time. This is an easy problem to fix—or at least, it’s much easier when you know someone else will be following up with you. When a friend knows that they need to give you feedback on your progress every week, they can hold you accountable and help keep things in perspective when things start getting overwhelming. 

Just make sure to let them know what types of support you want from them so that you aren’t both just emailing each other all day! (i.e., if you want encouragement, don’t ask for advice). You can also try setting goals together or working towards one big project together; helping others helps us to remember how good we feel when we accomplish something big ourselves.
